It all depends on how the engines are abused and what parts are used.396/402, BB's have much better breathing heads. More than make up for the weight. Both engine have nearly the same bore (4.125 vs 4.096/4.125) and stroke (3.75 vs 3.76) but the BB has longer rods. Which provide a better R/S ratio and less side loading on the cylinder wall. In some testing that a mag did comparing the two, the BB came out …Assemble the engine - crank/rods/pistons (less rings), and cam of course, and rotate the bottom end - slowly, by hand. See what happens, and let us know! The downside to a small base circle cam, is 'surface speed'. Any mechanist knows this term. The smaller the dia, the faster the surface speed. The faster the surface speed, the more …

No SBC is bad. A 383 cost the same to build as a 406 with the only exception being you might have to pay a little more for a 400 block over a 350 block. Most generally, and all other factors being equal, a long stroke small block like a 383 will make better numbers with a 106 LSA cam vs. one with a wider angle ground into it. Your compression ratio is suspect if you intend on running that much camshaft. You really need 12.5:1 minimum to really utilize a cam of these proportions.Re: SBC 383 vs. SBC 400 (Jenny) I'd probably go for the 383 unless I already had access to a good 400 block. The 23 extra cubes of the 406 (a 400 block with a .030 overbore like the 383) should yield a nearly proportionate power increase but I don't think it would be that noticible a difference unless measured on a dyno or at the strip.383 or 377 will not have a significant difference. use the 400 block with the 400 crank to make max power. All else being equal the long stroke 383 will make more torque, better fuel mileage and cleaner emissions thanks ...I have a 7500 rpm 383 ci and now I also have a 7000 rpm 427 ci small block. I'd never build another sub 396 ci motor again. Your not going to beat the 434/427 small block with a 377 if you have correct gearing. Lets say that motor "A" 377 makes an average of 500 foot pounds of TQ from 3500 - 7500 and Motor "B" 434 makes 520 lbs from 2500 to 6500.

The difference between the two is very noticable, the 454 will always have more low end.
